Sustainable Travel Tips and Links

This is a guest post by Mat and Blanca, the team who ran the Transition Café How Can We Have Sustainable Holidays And Travel? on 19th February. In our brainstorming session we came up with a whole range of travel ideas - from day trips around Cambridge to holidays across Europe - and lots of tips for things like where to get tickets, accommodation, and vegetarian or vegan food. So we thought it would be good to share them with you all here. We hope you find them useful.

Accommodation tips
  • Couchsurfing
  • Warm showers - similar to couchsurfing, but for cyclists
  • Swap houses - there are many house exchange sites
How to find cheap train tickets
  • Rome2Rio - shows all options of transport
  • BusRadar - shows options of trains too!
  • Eurostar Snap - for cheap Eurostar tickets
  • Seat61 - for working out the best way to get there by train
  • Rail Europe (formerly Loco2) - sometimes cheap tickets for journeys within the UK
Useful sites to share a car or car pool
Useful apps to plan cycle or hiking trips
Eating
  • Locavore - helps you determine which fruits and vegetables are in season wherever you are in the world
  • HappyCow - vegan and vegetarian restaurants around the world
Other
  • Spinlister - locates bike rentals from “peers” in over 100 countries
Ideas for holidays and trips
  • Cycling from Cambridge to another place, with tent and gas cooker, walking back
  • Camping at the sea: E.g. Norfolk (campsites.co.uk/search/campsites-in-norfolk) - special recommendation is Cromer Camping, very basic, cheap (£15 per pitch and night) and convenient location (walking distance from Cromer train station and bus stops) → bikes can be taken on the train from Cambridge to Cromer (make reservations!), cycling along the coast is lovely
  • Walking or cycling from Cambridge to Ely and taking the train back: take a break half-way at Five Miles from Anywhere No Hurry Inn and treat yourself in Ely, e.g. Samovar Tea House or Truly Scrumptious
Sustainable modes of transport
  • Bicycle
  • Hiking, running
  • Roller blades
  • Sailing boat
  • Kayak / folding kayak
  • Trains
  • Buses
  • Full cars

Let us know if you have more tips to share!
